Passenger traffic across Sweden’s airport network continued growing in May 2026 as more than 3.1 million travelers passed through Swedavia’s ten airports, supported primarily by rising international demand and expanding route networks.
The latest figures show that while domestic aviation continues facing challenges in some markets, international routes remain the primary driver behind Sweden’s aviation recovery.
Airports across the country reported growth during the month, although performance varied significantly between regions.
Swedavia Airports Handle More Than 3.1 Million Passengers
Swedavia reported total passenger traffic exceeding 3.1 million travelers in May 2026, representing growth of around 3% compared with May 2025.
International traffic increased by approximately 3%, while domestic passenger numbers grew by around 2% across the airport network.
Officials said international demand continues supporting growth despite ongoing uncertainty affecting global travel markets and geopolitical developments.
All ten airports within Swedavia’s network recorded positive passenger development during the month.
Stockholm Arlanda And Göteborg Landvetter Continue Leading Growth
Stockholm Arlanda Airport remained Sweden’s largest aviation gateway, handling more than 2.2 million passengers during May.
International passenger numbers at Arlanda increased by almost 3% to nearly 1.9 million travelers, while domestic traffic declined by around 2% to approximately 370,000 passengers.
Göteborg Landvetter Airport served roughly 500,000 passengers during the month, increasing nearly 4% year over year.
At Landvetter, international traffic rose almost 6% to approximately 455,000 passengers, while domestic volumes declined by around 10% to 47,000 passengers.
Regional Airports Expand As New Routes Launch
Several regional airports recorded stronger growth rates than Sweden’s largest hubs, with Visby Airport and Malmö Airport among the strongest performers during May.
Visby Airport benefited primarily from increased domestic travel, while Malmö Airport’s growth was largely driven by international passenger demand.
Meanwhile, Bromma Stockholm Airport handled just over 12,000 passengers during May, representing only around 5% of its pre-pandemic 2019 passenger volumes.
Airline expansion also continued during May and June, with new routes launching from Stockholm Arlanda to destinations including Shanghai, Milan, Hamburg, Montpellier and Basel, while Göteborg Landvetter added new services to Lamezia Terme.
