Northwestern Ontario’s Gerry Cariou recognized by Tourism Industry Association of Ontario

A long-time advocate for Northern Ontario’s tourism sector has been recognized for a lifetime of contributions by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO).

Gerry Cariou was presented with the TIAO’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the organization’s annual summit, held Oct. 22 in Ottawa.

Based in Kenora, Cariou is the executive director of Ontario’s Sunset Country, a non-profit organization that promotes tourism in northwestern Ontario.

Andrew Siegwart, president and CEO of Tourism Industry Association of Ontario, lauded Cariou for his dedication over the years.

“Gerry’s career represents the kind of leadership we need as Ontario tourism moves forward: resilient through change, deeply connected to operators and communities, and always looking for the next opportunity,” Siegwart said in a news release.

“For more than three decades, he has been a champion for Northwestern Ontario and a steady voice for the businesses that make its visitor economy possible.

“The industry’s Forward Motion strategy is about building a stronger tourism future across every region of Ontario, and Gerry’s lifetime of leadership embodies that spirit. TIAO is incredibly proud to recognize his contribution.”

Cariou started his 30-plus-year career in economic development, joining Lake of the Woods Community Development Inc. in the 1990s and shifting to his current position in 1999.

Cariou has been cited for his work strengthening tourism businesses, communities and destinations across Northern Ontario.

That includes early adoption of digital destination marketing, including the use of social media, new search technologies and artificial intelligence.

He’s also helped businesses navigate periods of uncertainty, such as during economic downturns, border closures and changing visitor behaviour.

“Gerry’s leadership through challenges big and small, his ingenuity, and his dedication to promoting northwestern Ontario have made an incredible impact on the region’s tourism industry,” Matt Rydberg, owner of Crawford’s Camp, said in the release.

“He has continually stayed ahead of new ideas and methods, while always being willing to help businesses and others in the industry with his knowledge and insight. His passion for Northwestern Ontario and everything he does is undeniable.”

The TIAO advocates for the interests of its industry membership and works with stakeholders to promote growth and create a favourable business environment.
